Deciding between the Inca Trail 2 days vs 4 days is one of the most common dilemmas I see among travelers planning their journey to Machu Picchu. Both routes offer that magical moment of entering the citadel through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), but the physical commitment and the “vibe” of the trip are completely different.
As part of the BEST ANDES TRAVEL team, I’ve walked these paths many times. I want to help you decide based on your fitness level, your schedule, and how much you enjoy sleeping under the stars.
The Classic Inca Trail (4 Days / 3 Nights)
This is the legendary trek. If you are looking for a full immersion into the Andes and want to challenge your limits, this is the one.
- Distance: 42 km (26 miles).
- Maximum Altitude: 4,215 m (13,828 ft) at the famous “Dead Woman’s Pass.”
- The Experience: You will hike through diverse ecosystems, from high Andean tundras to lush cloud forests. You’ll visit several archaeological sites that are only accessible on this route, such as Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca.
- Accommodation: Three nights of camping. Our team of porters and professional cooks will make sure you have a comfortable tent and hot, nutritious meals every day.
- Best for: Travelers in good physical condition who want the “full” historical experience and don’t mind the lack of a hot shower for a few days.
The Short Inca Trail (2 Days / 1 Night)
Think of this as the “best of” version. It’s perfect if you have limited time or if the idea of camping for three nights feels a bit too intense.
- Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles).
- Maximum Altitude: 2,720 m (8,924 ft).
- The Experience: You start at Km 104 and hike for about 6 to 7 hours. You still get to visit the stunning Wiñay Wayna ruins and walk through the Sun Gate to see Machu Picchu for the first time at sunset.
- Accommodation: You spend the night in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes.
- Best for: Families, those with a tighter schedule, or anyone who prefers a soft bed and a warm shower before their big day at the citadel.

Which is right for you?
In my experience, if you have the time and the stamina, the 4-day trek is a life-changing experience. There is something deeply spiritual about waking up in the mountains. However, the 2-day trek is a fantastic “tourism service” that offers the same iconic entrance to Machu Picchu without the extreme physical toll.
At BEST ANDES TRAVEL, we offer both versions with competitive prices and expert guides who bring the history of the Incas to life.
For the adventure seekers
The adventurers can climb to the peak of Wayna Pichu, an unforgettable experience to get to know sacred places and terraces built over the steep cliff.
The way up starts of the main plazo at Machu Picchu through a road built by the Incas. The Machu Picchu Sanctuary can be observed from the top in all its glory as well as the Vilcanota canyon.
