Inca Trail Permits 2026

Inca Trail Permits – Inca Trail Availability

Why Are Permits So Hard to Get?

The Inca Trail Permits is regulated by the Peruvian authorities as only a limited number of people are allowed on the trail each day. Now only 500 people are permited on the trail every mornig – this includes hikers, guides, porters and cooks. Trekking permits are included when you book on to one of our Inca Trail tours but they can only be purchased once your place on the tour is confirmed as they are not transferable. As permits often sell out months ahead we recommend that you confirm your place well in advance – Ideally by the end of December if you wish to trek the Inca Trail the following year.

Permits for the Inca Trail

Many people don’t realize that there is a limit of 500 trekkers per day to start the Inca Trail, and that number includes all of the support staff – guides, cooks, and porters. In order to preserve the integrity of this famous part of what the Inca called the Qhapaq Ñan – the 24,800 mile system of paths that run through the Andes and the ancient Inca Empire and is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – no hooved pack animals are allowed along the majority of what is now known as the Inca Trail.

We therefore have to rely on people to help us carry camping gear, food, sleeping and cooking supplies. In ancient times these people were called “chaskis” that ran like lightning along these paths tag-team style, and were famed for the speed in which they could get messages across the vast expanse of the Inca Empire.

When Do Inca Trail 2026 Permits Go on Sale?

The Ministry of Culture usually launches the booking system for the next year around October or November, depending on the official release schedules.

Permits are anticipated to be issued in a phased manner beginning in late 2025 for the 2026 season. Within hours of their release, popular months like May, June, and July—which correspond with the dry season and regional celebrations like Inti Raymi—often sell out.

Essential Details for Your 2026 Trek

To book your permit, I need specific information that must match your passport exactly. Any error can result in being turned away at the first checkpoint!

  • Full Name: Your passport’s exact name.
  • Passport Number: Your passport number needs to be valid on the day you plan to trek.
  • Date of Birth & Nationality: Nationality and date of birth are necessary for government registration.
  • Student Status: I must provide a valid university ID at the time of booking if you are eligible for a discount.

Important Note: Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once I secure your spot with the government, the date and name cannot be changed.

Best Time to Hike in 2026

  • The most popular period is the Dry Season, which runs from May to September. Anticipate cool nights and brilliant azure sky. Reservations must be made at least six to eight months in advance.
  • My favorite time of year is Shoulder Season (April, October, November). There are less people on the trail, and the scenery is verdant and lush. Make reservations four to five months in advance.
  • The trail is at its quietest during the rainy season, which runs from December to March. Enjoy the ethereal mood, but be ready for rain.
  • February Closure: Please keep in mind that the Inca Trail is closed in February for conservation and maintenance.

Booking your 2026 Inca Trail

Permits are secured with your name, passport number, date of birth and nationality for a particular day to enter the trail. Once your permit secured, the Peruvian government allows no changes to be made under any circumstances, permits are not transferable to another name or date. Once we receive your booking details and deposit, we will secure your permit and confirm your reservation – and you will be 100% guaranteed to enter the Inca Trail for this date. So make sure you have your passports ready and your start date set and let us do everything else!

Permits are first come, first serve and once they are secured, can not be changed. Transfers of names and dates are absolutely PROHIBITED. So make sure that your start date works well with flights and times off of work, and that your permit is purchased in the name on your passport.
